In Singapore, most people refer to a person conducting Private Investigation as a Private Investigator or Private Detective or Private Eye. In fact, there is no difference between a Private Investigator, a Private Detective and a Private Eye. These terms are often used interchangeably.

In the 1850's an American by the name of Allan Pinkerton believed to be the first person to register a Private Detective Agency in the world. They called themselves "Pinkerton National Detective Agency" and they were the first Private Detective Agency to hire a female detective. They started specializing in railway theft cases.

The company logo of Pinkerton National Detective Agency, the "EYE" gives rise to the term "Private Eye" as a nickname for Private Detective.
